Today health care, including mental health care, is very big business, a business so big that even in the later days of the 20th century it consumed some 14% of our Gross National Product (Koudsi & Costa, 1998) and is still growing! Thus, alternative medicine and care means alternative sources of potential profit. Think of all the potential money to be made, for instance, if pharmacological corporations, which are gigantic players in the health care industry, had control of such alternative health care possibilities as herbal remedies and supplemental nutrients (Valenstein, 1998).
If so, then we clinicians and social scientists would do well to learn about them and to incorporate what we can support into our theories of behavior and the way we train people to become clinicians, as long we do not violate our scientific foundations. These issues are very much alive at the theoretical and practical levels of mental health today. For example, the field of the psychology of religion seems to have exploded during the 1990s and has done so to the extent that it now generates a steady stream of empirically oriented studies on religion and mental health (Pargament, 1997; Schumaker, 1992; Shafranske, 1996; Spilka & Mclntosh, 1997), as well as ones that focus on how it may be possible to integrate spirituality and psychotherapy without becoming completely unscientific (Cornell, 1998; Cortright, 1997; Emmons, 1999; Miller, 1999; Wong & Fry, 1998).
Less popular approaches include energy healing, ayurveda, naturopathy, and Native American practices. Even support groups and psychotherapy/counseling are considered CAM treatments by some authors, (p. 200) However, even this very careful approach to defining the difference between traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine turns out to be problematic. For two years after it first addressed these issues, National Public Radio came back to them. They began this program with a very telling discussion of the results of the various research activities that were just beginning at the time of the first show.
